Scotland Yard member faces disciplinary proceedings for G20 misconduct.
Scotland Yard's Pc Simon Harwood, who was filmed striking a 47-year-old newspaper seller before he died at the G20 protests, will now face disciplinary proceedings for his actions.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Paul Stephenson, today urged the Home Affairs Committee to act quickly on the issue, stating that he was “disturbed” by the amateur video footage of the incident.
In a a meeting with the Commons Home Affairs Committee, he said, “It is right we move swiftly and it is also right that there is full public disclosure at the inquest.
“I can confirm that the officer has been notified that a decision has been made to bring disciplinary proceedings for gross misconduct.”
Pc Simon Harwood, a member of Scotland Yard's territorial support group, was caught on film striking 47-year-old Ian Tomlinson with his baton and pushing him to the ground in the City of London on 1 April 2009.
However, it had been declared by the director of public prosecutions last Thursday that there would be no criminal proceedings over Mr Tomlinson's death.
Sir Paul Stephenson said that it would be "entirely inappropriate" to comment on the Crown Prosecution Service's (CPS) decision.
Mr. Tomlinson's family feels “outraged” by the decision taken by the CPS.
The family's legal team has been advised to review the decision, ahead of the inquest into Mr. Tomlinson's death.
Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) Temporary Chairman, Len Jackson, said,"We are pleased the Metropolitan Police has responded quickly to the file of evidence we provided them with on Friday.
"We will examine the proposed course of action before agreeing how this should proceed and respond as swiftly as possible."
