Crying Wolf Club: Fresh Start for Established Act

Crying Wolf Club

Crying Wolf Club, formed from the remnants of South Wales favourites Broken City Skyline, hit 2012 hard with new tracks.

Under the old name Broken City Skyline the group, formed in 2006 and described as “a forward thinking pop band with widescreen ambition”, firmly established themselves in the South Wales music scene.

The indie/alternative outfit’s achievements include victory in Off the Chart Radio’s international battle of the bands, reaching the semi-finals of the Surface Unsigned Festival, and three well received EPs, granting them the opportunity to share the stage with many high-profile Welsh acts, including Tiger Please, Cuba Cuba, The Blackout, and critically acclaimed Kids in Glass Houses.

After becoming jaded by “the stressful parts of being in a band” during summer 2011, Broken City Skyline took the decision to start over. Taking on new name Crying Wolf Club and vocalist Lucy Fellows, alongside the original line-up of brothers Dewi, Alun and Marc Bowen and bassist Danni Kennedy, they are now set to launch back on to the South Wales music scene with a fresh sound.

The five-piece, who describe their new music as having an “indie/atmospheric feel”, entered the studio in late 2011, recording two singles at Cardiff based Stir Studios, producing and mixing them at Hafod Mastering. The band’s first single ‘Set Your Sails’ is available on the band’s website while second single ‘Tired of the Rain’, featuring new vocalist Lucy Fellows, is available as a free download after joining the band’s mailing list.

Speaking to The Fresh Outlook, guitarist and backing vocalist Alun Bowen revealed the group’s ambitious plans for the rest of the year. He said: “We have loads planned for 2012. We’re about to start recording an EP, which will be done in a month or two. After that were going to start working towards and album. As well as this were going to be gigging as much as possible, shooting a few videos and touring around the UK.”

Bowen also explained the reasons for the drastic change from the well-established Broken City Skyline to the unknown Crying Wolf Club, telling us that: “we found with [Broken City Skyline] we were concentrating our efforts on the stressful parts of being in a band, like getting enough people to shows…We’d like to be able to have as much fun with this as we can.”

Crying Wolf Club’s more relaxed approach, coupled with huge ambition for the coming year, seems likely to lead them to the same level of success they achieved as Broken City Skyline, with their unique sound setting them apart from the majority of current Welsh music.
