The Yemen defence ministry has reported on Friday morning the death of Islamic cleric and suspected al-Qaeda leader, Anwar al-Awlaki.
A message sent out by the Yemen defence ministry to journalist claims: “The terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki has been killed along with some of his companions”.
The American born radical, who is believed to be on a CIA hit list as well as named as a “specially designated global terrorist”, has reportedly been killed in Yemen earlier today after being on the run since December 2007.
It has been reported by Yemeni security officials that an airstrike took place earlier this morning in the east of Yemen, between the al-Jawf and Marib regions, allegedly targeting an al-Qaeda convoy.
However, the defence ministry has not confirmed any details in the brief statement released this morning.
Al-Awlaki was believed to have been implicated in several terrorist attacks including an attempt to bomb a plane bound for America at Christmas in 2009, a failed attempt to bomb New York’s Times Square, as well as the killings at an American army base in Texas.
