Tigers Beat Yankees in American League Division Series

The Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees 3-2 yesterday in game five of the play-offs in a nerve-wracking match.
The Tigers beat the Yankees last night in an anxious affair as there was a lot riding on this game because the winners would go on to compete in the AL Championship Series and possibly the World Series.
It did not take long for the Tigers fans’ nerves to settle as Don Kelly hit a homerun on a fly ball out to the right, and then immediately afterwards Delmon Young hit a homerun to the left field, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead at top of the first.
The Tigers then increased their lead further at the top of the fifth when Victor Martinez singled on a line drive to the centre and Austin Jackson scored. The Tigers looked to be pulling away from the Yankees at this point but Robinson Cano hit a homerun to the right in the bottom of the fifth which made for an anxious last few innings.
The Yankees managed to score again in the bottom of the seventh when Mark Teixeira walked and Derek Jeter scored. But Jose Valverde stepped up to the mound and closed out the game for the Tigers in front of a record crowd of 50,960 to send the Tigers to their first AL Championship series since 2006.
The Tigers will now face the Texas Rangers who beat the Tampa Bay Rays in their ALDS and are on route for their first World Series title since 1984. They have a tough challenge ahead of them if they are to claim this title for the first time in 27 years.
