Greece’s Unbeaten Streak Continues
October 10, 2011 TheFreshOutlook |
Saturday night’s performance and win by two goals to nil against Croatia in their 2012 Euro Qualifier marked unbeaten game number fifteen for the Greek national team, giving an end to the previous record of fourteen German coach Otto Rehhagel oversaw.
Portuguese coach Fernando Santos is the new hero in town for the Greek Football Association and he is setting eyes on his first participation in a major tournament.
It all started in August 2010 when Santos first sat on the Greek bench for a friendly match against Serbia. The Greeks won that match by one goal to nil in Belgrade.
After that game there were only wins and draws for the Greek side, making them the seventh highest-ranked European team in the Fifa world rankings. The 2004 European Championship winners are only one point away from qualifying directly to the tournament in Poland and Ukraine. It will be the third successive appearance of the Greek team to a European tournament after the unforgettable journeys of 2004 and 2008.
After Saturday’s game Greece is at the top of the table in Group F with 21 points, while the Croatian team is in second place with 19.
