New US Terror Alerts after Saudi Ambassador Targeted
October 12, 2011 TheFreshOutlook |
Worldwide travel alert for all American citizens issued on Tuesday night after attempt made on the Saudi ambassador in Washington.
US authorities reported yesterday that a plot to assassinate the Saudi Ambassador Adel al-Jubeir had been intercepted.
Five Iranian men, four of which are reportedly senior members of the Quds force, the special operations unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, were believed to be behind the planned bomb attack on a restaurant in Washington.
Two of the group, Manssor Arbabsiar and Gholam Shakuri, are currently being held in New York, charged with allegedly attempting to hire a Mexican drug cartel to help with the assassination.
A statement that was released on the government website said: “The US government assesses that this Iranian-backed plan to assassinate the Saudi ambassador may indicate a more aggressive focus by the Iranian government on terrorist activity against diplomats from certain countries, to include possible attacks in the United States.”
Despite complaints of US “warmongering” to the UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, by Iran’s ambassador, and the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, describing the allegations as “a fabrication”, Hillary Clinton said she and Barack Obama plan to “enlist more countries in working together against what is becoming a clearer and clearer threat” from Iran.
The current US travel alert is only valid until January 11 2012.
