Cara Pearce: Being On Stage is an “Unexplainable, Amazing Feeling”

Cara Pearce

Cara Pearce is an up-and-coming artist from Swansea. But her outrageous hair style isn’t the only thing that’s attracting attention.

After starting out busking and doing open mic nights, the 21-year-old is now progressing on to bigger gigs. As well as this, Cara is also entering the recording studio, where she will create a demo of some of her songs. She recently spoke to The Fresh Outlook about her music and influences.

The young artist has been musical since the age of seven, playing various instruments including the guitar and cornet, whilst also describing herself as a “lifelong triangle player”. Her music is laid back and has a quirky indie feel. However, what makes Cara so different from other artists is the content of her songs. There have a rawness about them, which she claims is due to the influences of Alanis Morrisette and KT Tunstall. She claims that The KT Tunstall song ‘Heal Over’ actually inspired her to learn guitar at the age of 14. She would also like to duet with Jessie J, saying: “She has such a positive energy and that voice is amazing!”

But Cara’s musical influences don’t end there. With extensive musical influences gained from joining the school orchestra and learning musical instruments, as well as her parents Jeff and Sharon Pearce, who are well known amongst the Swansea brass scene, it is little wonder that she has been drawn to music in general - it is in her blood.

Apart from listening to stars in the music industry, Cara says her songs are also influenced by “friends, relationships, important moments. Sometimes I just hear a word that gets me thinking and I write around that word.”

Her dream is to write songs that mean something to people and to get as many people interested in her music as possible: “I’d love to be a successful artist; I would love to turn on the radio one day and my song to be playing.” Although she admits that even last year a lot of people didn’t know she sang let alone wrote her own music.

This week Cara will be working in the recording studio, which will hopefully result in a demo of some of her songs. She will be working with Craig Davies Productions. Alongside this, there is a charity set up in Swansea that Craig is also involved with, which is encouraging artists in and around Swansea to play music, whilst also giving them a platform for their music to be heard. This is something that Cara definitely “wants to be part of”.

Describing herself as a “shy” person from a young age, it is intriguing to watch her confident performances. She says when she is introducing the songs she just mumbles and hopes that people have heard, but “as soon as the music kicks in I’m a different person; that’s when I feel my most confident, and the adrenaline is possibly one of the greatest feelings”. For Cara, being on stage is an “unexplainable, amazing feeling”.

For now at least, Cara will continue to play gigs in the Swansea area, but her main priority is recording a demo and distributing it to record companies. Cara’s ultimate dream isn’t necessarily to become famous, however, just for “as many people as possible” to know about her music.
