36 Farc Rebels Dead in Air Strike

36 Farc Rebels die after Colombian military air strike on a guerrilla camp in Meta State Municipality of Vista Hermosa.

The attack occurred on Monday as the rebel group The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc) stated that they were about to free their last prisoner.

General Alejandro Navas, chief of Colombia’s armed forces, stated that the strike had been planned for several months and adhered to “the rules of conflict”.

Last week 33 rebels were reported to have been killed during a similar raid.

The rebels started their campaign in 1964 with the demand that wealth is more evenly distributed throughout the country.

Farc has been responsible for the majority of the world’s kidnappings. They announced that they will stop abducting people for ransom and free the remaining 10 prisoners, who have been held for as long as 14 years, on April 2 and 4.

Marleny Orjuela, who has campaigned for their release said: “I don’t think that because of these operations [the strikes] the releases will be cancelled.”
