England’s women demolished Slovenia in their Euro 2013 Qualifier last night, after drawing away against Serbia 2-2 five days ago.
England’s European qualifiers campaign has been given a boost after they demolished Slovenia 4-0, who are ranked 56 places below England in the FIFA world rankings.
This was a much needed win for the English team after a disappointing loss to Serbia last weekend.
England coach Hope Powell said: “The players were keen to show they are better than drawing with Serbia, and they showed vigour and energy throughout the match.”
This energy was highlighted by the Arsenal trio of Rachel Yankey, Ellen White and Steph Houghton who spear-headed the English attack.
Yankey was the first to score from a low cross shot that was drilled into the corner, and moments later her Gunners team mate White headed home the second in the fifth minute.
Slovenia had a few chances in the first half but these were saved easily by the English ‘keeper. The next major attack in the first half came though White’s mis-directed shot but this was cleared off the line by Lucija Grad. England went in at half time firmly in the driving seat with a 2-0 lead.
After the first half, Steph Houghton was the first to score for England as she slipped between two defenders and put a headed effort into the corner. The final score came from Yankey’s substitute Rachel Williams. This gave England a 4-0 victory and three points
England will now take on the Netherland’s in their next game away in a confident mindset but know that it will be a hard task to beat the Dutch team.
