British cyclist Helen Wyman continues her dominant pre-European season preparations with an impressive six consecutive victories in the United States.
Cyclist Helen Wyman is celebrating her sixth consecutive win on the American circuit before preparing to return to Europe and continue what is proving to be a hugely successful season for the five-time consecutive British cyclo-cross champion.
The St Albans-born racer, 30, who is also a qualified physiotherapist, has nine races planned across the States before tackling the European season, and with six-straight wins under belt she has, thus far, had the perfect preparation.
“I’m so happy with how things have gone,” she said. “Six wins is more than I’d thought would be possible and I still have three races to go.
“The courses have been fantastic and the organisation of the events is first class. In respect of the courses, there is no gap between them and Europe.
“I came to the USA after a period of time where my off-road training was compromised by a shoulder injury,” she continued. “Thankfully I have that all dealt with and it has just added more focus to the quality training I’m getting here during the races.”
Wyman has notched victories in both Day One and Day Two of the Nittany Lion and Charm City events, plus wins at Nor East Cross and Rochester Cross to take her current run to six.
Her European campaign is set to kick off at Ruddervorde, which now runs alongside the men’s event, before tackling back-to-back World Cups in the Czech Republic. Then comes her defence of the Koppenburg title before heading to Italy for the European Championships.
But Wyman is unsure of her chances heading in to the event in Italy, stating: “I’ve been third for the last two years in the Euro’s, but I’m not sure that’s going to happen again.”
“I’m totally focused on the World Championships and I’m not sure my form is going to be anywhere near the level you need to medal at a Championships come November.”
