Olympic Stadium Track Revealed

The athletics track was unveiled yesterday at the 2012 Olympic stadium, tested by athletes such as 1500m sprinter Hannah England.
The synthetic rubber athletics track was unveiled to the media on Monday at the 2012 Olympic stadium alongside a selection of British athletes and school children. Chris Tomlinson, British long jumper, said: To have such a stadium and such infrastructure is just amazing.”
The track that has been laid in the 80,000 capacity stadium is similar to the one that was laid in Beijing and comes from an Italian company called Mondo. This track was designed to help athletes run faster, and if Beijing is anything to go by it should be an exciting competition, as five world records were broken on the track in China.
There has also been an 80 metre sprint track placed under one of the stands and there are plans for a 400 metre practice track to be laid.
London 2012 chairman Lord Coe stated that yesterday marked “a huge milestone for the project as the stadium comes to life”.
The latest final anticipated cost of the Olympic stadium is £486 million and the athletics track is just a small percentage of this cost, but the laying of the track does mark the final stages of completion in the construction of this stadium.
Olympic Delivery Authority chairman John Armitt said: “Watching athletes and children run around the Olympic Stadium’s track 10 months before the London 2012 Games highlights just how much has been achieved over the last four years.”
