Baghdad Hosts Arab League Summit to Discuss Syria

Baghdad

An Arab League summit is being held in Baghdad today to discuss how to implement a peace plan in Syria.

The plan has been devised jointly by the United Nations and the Arab League.
It would result in the withdrawal of troops from opposition areas and unhindered access for humanitarian services.

Syria has agreed to this; however, violence is still present throughout the country.

The conference is not expected to achieve a lot, but it is hailed as a landmark for Iraq because it is the first time that an Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Jaber al-Sabah, has visited the country since Saddam Hussien’s invasion in 1990.

A spokesperson for the US State Department said: “It’s incumbent on all of us to keep the pressure on Assad to meet the commitment that he’s made, and that’s our intention over the next few days.”

An all day curfew has been put in to effect in Baghdad throughout the duration of the summit.
