Kanepi Triumphs over World Number One Wozniacki

Shock result in Tokyo as number 43 seed Kaia Kanepi snatches a convincing victory over world number one Caroline Wozniacki.

Estonian Kaia Kanepi, seeded 43rd, knocked current world number one Caroline Wozniacki, out of the third round of the WTA Tour Pan Pacific Open this week, with the shock match ending in a three-set defeat.

Kanepi stunned the spectators as she took the match to 7-5, 1-6, 6-4. Wozniacki, 21, is currently the reigning champion, after playing her first tournament since her US Open semi-finals when Serena Williams ended her US Open hopes after convincingly claiming a 6-4, 6-4 win.

In other news, Vera Zvonareva defeated Iveta Benesova in straight sets and also progresses to the final eight of the tournament in Tokyo.

The number four seed came out trumps as she waltzed into her 12th quarter-final of the year. The rising star had convincingly won her two recent meetings against Benesova, and this one was no different as the Russian wonder woman churned out five straight games from one-a-piece, and pulled back a stellar 6-2 victory after Benesova taking two early games to go 2-1 up in the second.

Zvonareva will face another Russian in the form of Maria Kirilenko who reached the last eight beating number six seed Samantha Stosur.

This is not a new obstacle for Zvonareva as she has faced and beaten Kirilenko in all five of their previous meeting.

Others to feature in the last eight consist of the third seed, Victoria Azarenka, and number seven seed, Marion Bartoli, who was the first of the two to advance to the latter stages of the competition after her 6-2, 6-1 victory over Peng Shuai.
