Varnish Takes Gold at National Track Championships

Jess Varnish won the 500m time trial title in Manchester yesterday, setting a new personal best time of 34.5 seconds.

Varnish, the world team sprint silver medallist, completed the 500m time trial (TT) yesterday in a time 34.5 seconds, which was enough to ensure her victory. She managed to beat Laura Trott, world team pursuit champion, and Becky James, who could not do enough to beat the Worcestershire-born sprint cyclist.

This puts Varnish is a good position to partner Victoria Pendelton in the team sprint at the Olympic Games next year where Britain will be looking to improve upon past success and gain a great deal of medals in the Velodrome.

In other news from the National Track Championships, Steven Burke, the Olympic bronze medallist, won the open pursuit title in three minutes, 59.758 seconds and Jon Allen Butterworth won in the MC5 category.

Butterworth set a new world-best time of 1:07.459 in the Para cycling TT.

The National Track Championships will continue until Sunday the October 2 with the Women’s Individual Pursuit, Men’s Kilo TT and Para cycling 200m TT all taking place today.

Many riders will have come into these Championships with the hope of success as this would put them in a confident state of mind with a hard winter of racing ahead. These Championships and the winter races will have a significant effect on the cyclist’s inclusion and success in the 2012 Olympic Games, which starts next July.
