Yolanda Dominguez Talks about Poses, Her Latest Art Achievement

Madrid-born Yolanda Dominguez explains her latest art project, a direct criticism of the world of glamour and fashion within magazines.

Artist Yolanda Dominguez is the woman behind Poses, a video project which aims to highlight how magazines transmit highly distorted images of women.

Taking pictures of real women acting as models on the streets of Madrid, Ms Dominguez sought to highlight the differences between real women and the images of models in magazines. She succeeded in producing effective images which received a positive response worldwide.

“I don’t feel like I can identify myself with women’s magazines; men’s magazines are much more interesting. The images that women’s magazines carry are both unrealistic and absurd. It seems that women do nothing but spend the day shopping or taking care of their beauty,” said Ms Dominguez speaking exclusively to The Fresh Outlook.

“The poses of the models in many magazines transmit an image of women sprawled, half dead, sick, weak and available…and I think that this is all very worrying, especially because of the absence of other female role models within the media. All this never happens with men’s magazines; with these always portraying situations where men are powerful and successful,” Ms Dominguez added.

According to Ms Dominguez, fashion models are not treated fairly by the magazine industry considering how heavily photoshoped their images are. “Trying to be like those models can be very harmful for normal women. Moreover, women are so much more than their appearance; magazines represent only a tiny fraction of what a woman really is.”

Speaking about her future projects, Ms Dominguez said:

“I am now working on a new project which looks at the enslavement of beauty and how it affects the professional life of women. I am also collaborating with a fashion designer.”

Ms Dominguez is a visual artist and performer. She holds a Masters in Art and New Technologies from the European University of Madrid. She has presented her work in different photographic festivals and she teaches in different Spanish women’s institutions and associations.
